چکیده

What makes be omissions possible? An obvious candidate answer that has long been entertained is simply this: be is semantically empty, hence a good choice to omit under performance-related pressures (cf. Brown & Fraser 1963). This would make beomission expected in all child languages. What would this hypothesis lead us to expect about the infinitive form of be? In terms of semantic vacuity, nonfinite be is an even better choice for omission than finite be, since it does not carry tense or agreement information (as noted by Brown 1973)—most such deletions would be completely recoverable, as can be seen in (2), which consists of invented examples illustrating a range of relevant environments.

Comments on Nonfinite Adverbial Patterns in English Prose Fiction: A Simple Model for Analysis and Use

This study aims to present an accessible model of some frequent nonfinite adverbial types occurring in English prose fiction. As its main syntactic argument, it recognizes that these adverbials are mostly elliptical in that there are some dependent-clause markers one can assume to be implicit when supplying those elements back into the clause complex. Some comments are provided at the end on th...

The production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses by children with specific language impairment and their typically developing peers.

The purpose of this study was to explore whether 13 children with specific language impairment (SLI; ages 5;1-8;0 [years;months]) were as proficient as typically developing age- and vocabulary-matched children in the production of finite and nonfinite complement clauses. Preschool children with SLI have marked difficulties with verb-related morphology. However, very little is known about these ...

Verb-types and Modality in Early Child L2 Root Infinitives*

This paper investigates to what extent child second language (L2) acquisition is similar to first language (L1) acquisition. The focus is on the nature of root infinitives (RIs) produced by children, namely root declarative clauses whose main verb is either a past participle or an infinitive, whereas a finite form is required in the target language (e.g. papa partir 'daddy leave-INF' instead of...

Null Case and the Distribution of PRO

Chomsky and Lasnik (1993) argue convincingly that PRO has null Case, checked by nonfinite T, and suggest that this may explain PRO’s narrow distribution. However, their analysis falls short of reaching this goal. Here, I refine the theory of null Case so as to fully account for the distribution of empty and lexical subjects of nonfinite clauses, concluding that this minimalist analysis is more ...
